as an eyewitness..
i saw a man on a scooter
(now known to be an undercover officer..formerly of
the infamous “street crimes unit”..the very same unit
responsible for the shooting..41 times..of unarmed citizen

drive at reckless speed into a peaceful crowd which included
mothers with infants and children..handicapped and elderly individuals
and students..
at which point a march “peacekeeper”
interdicted the man before injuries could occur
the “officer”.. still with out identifying himself..
attempted to draw a concealed handgun..
this resulted in his “neutralization” by the “peacekeeper”
all involved are lucky no one was killed.
the senior officers in charge should be censured or worse
the marchers and “peacekeepers” SHOULD BE CONGRATULATED
for their restraint in what was WITHOUT DOUBT..
AN UNPROVOKED ASSAULT BY ROGUE NYPD OFFICERS.

citizen x monitored “Google News” during the RNC from August 28, 2004 to September 4, 2004. Searching for terms such as “protest”, “demonstration”, “new york protest”, “RNC protest”, “new york demonstration”, etc.

On Sunday, Google News returned a handful of articles reporting that 500,000+ U.S. Citizens who took to New York City streets to protest the U.S. occupation of Iraq and other policies of Bush and the neocon war party. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and most of Thursday, searches on Google returned almost no additional articles reporting the ongoing protests of the war party by thousands of U.S. Citizens in many locations in Manhattan.

Suddenly, as the RNC neared its end and following the judiciary’s finding that New York City was in contempt of court for violating a writ of habeas corpus, articles about the multiple protests of the neo-conservative party began to appear on Google. my first thoughts included the idea that Google’s roboticized news service was faithfully reflecting an absence of reporting on the RNC protests by mainstream media.

Today, Friday September 4, 2004, there are over 10,000 articles returned by Google News searches on the term “new york protest” including an article from infoshop.org. Curious, i went to Google News advanced search feature and searched for news articles by date on each of the days of the RNC. Google News is now returning over 1,000 articles for each of those days. citizen x is wondering why Google News was delayed in returning these articles on the days they were published? As far as i know, Google is usually very timely in returning published news articles.

Google News public relations has always claimed that article selection is an automated process without human intervention. In an article published by the “The Register” on Monday 17th May 2004, it was revelaed that “Google has an Ethics Committee.” Google’s, Dr. Eran Gabber acknowledged in the article that the Ethics Committee occasionally changes the page rank of some pages. Inquiries into how decisions to change page rank and how often such changes occur has resulted in replies from Google representatives that the article describes as “acrobatics.”

citizen x is now wondering if the absence of news on Google News about the protests in New York City during the RNC was due to a decision of the Google Ethics Committee, or if there is another reasonable explanation. Given Google News’s near monopoly on Internet news searching, i believe Google News should provide an explanation of this anomaly and any policies that resulted in this anomaly. Without such an explanation, citizen x and perhaps other Google News users cannot trust that Google News provides a timely and accurate representation of news reporting.

In an issue related to Google News accuracy citizen x has noted that Google News does not return articles published by Independent Media Centers. As thousands around the world know, the most timely and accurate reporting of the protests and police tactics during the RNC was provided by the New York Independent Media Center website:

To be generous, i will assume that Google and its Ethics Committee are unaware of Independent Media Centers or do not appreciate the methods of this increasingly relevant news phenomenon. Such a lack of appreciation is understandable given the prevalent model of “top down” news reporting that dominates popular culture. Independent Media Centers rely largely on volunteer reporters rather than professional reporters to report the news. Readers of the news discuss these reports and then with the benefit of multiple perspectives news readers decide for themselves which reports seem most accurate and relevant. Independent writers distill these reports into feature articles that are prominently displayed on the Independent Media Center websites. Readers are encouraged to critique and comment on all reports and features.

Top down news methods significantly constrain the number of perspectives that informs pop culture news. Top down news reporting is vulnerable to numerous abuses including editorial policing by corporate board members with political agendas. The Independent Media Center model is not perfect, however it goes a long way toward increasing the number of perspectives represented in news reporting and reduces the possibility of a media dominated by a small elitist perspective. citizen x anticipates that as Independent Media continues to evolve, its inclusive methodology will begin to replace the currently dominant top down method that seems to me increasingly ineffective.

It would be unfortunate if Google missed out on this emerging global trend in news reporting. i will post this article on the Google Support Forum.
