Sept. 22 - In its rush to air its now discredited story about President George W. Bush’s National Guard service,
CBS bumped another sensitive piece slated for the same “60 Minutes” broadcast:
a half-hour segment about how the U.S. government was snookered by forged documents..
purporting to show Iraqi efforts to purchase uranium from Niger.

The journalistic juggling at CBS provides an ironic counterpoint to the furor over apparently bogus documents..
involving Bush’s National Guard service. One unexpected consequence of the network’s decision was to wipe out a chance
—at least for the moment—for greater public scrutiny of a more consequential forgery..
that played a role in building the Bush administration’s case to invade Iraq.

A team of “60 Minutes” correspondents and consulting reporters
spent more than six months investigating the Niger uranium documents fraud,
CBS sources tell NEWSWEEK. The group landed the first ever on-camera interview with Elisabetta Burba,
the Italian journalist who first obtained the phony documents, as well as her elusive source,
Rocco Martino, a mysterious Roman businessman with longstanding ties to European intelligence agencies.

Although the edited piece never ended up identifying Martino by name,
the story, narrated by “60 Minutes” correspondent Ed Bradley,
asked tough questions about how the White House came to embrace the fraudulent documents..
and why administration officials chose to include a 16-word reference to the questionable uranium purchase..
in President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union speech.

But just hours before the piece was set to air on the evening of Sept. 8,
the reporters and producers on the CBS team were stunned to learn the story was being scrapped..
to make room for a seemingly sensational story about new documents..
showing that Bush ignored a direct order..
to take a flight physical while serving in the National Guard more than 30 years ago.

The story has since created a journalistic and political firestorm,
resulting in a colossal embarrassment for CBS.
This week, the network concluded that its principle source for the documents,
a disgruntled former Guard official and Democratic partisan named Bill Burkett,
had lied about where he got the material.
CBS anchor Dan Rather publicly apologized for broadcasting the faulty report.
Today, CBS named a two-person team comprised of former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh
and former Associated Press chief Louis Boccardi to investigate the network’s handling of the story. .

“This is like living in a Kafka novel,” said Joshua Micah Marshall,
a Washington Monthly contributing writer who had been collaborating with “60 Minutes” producers on the uranium story.
“Here we had a very important, well-reported story about forged documents that helped lead the country to war.
And then it gets bumped by another story that relied on forged documents.”

Some CBS reporters, as well as one of the network’s key sources, fear that the Niger uranium story may never run,
at least not any time soon, on the grounds that the network can now not credibly air a report..
questioning how the Bush administration could have gotten taken in by phony documents.
The network would “be a laughingstock,” said one source intimately familiar with the story.

So who are these nay-sayers who claim the sky is falling?
Conspiracy fanatics? Nostradamus fans? Apocalypse Bible prophecy readers? 
To the contrary, they are some of the most respected, highest paid geologists, physicists,
petroleum engineers, and investment bankers in the world. 
These are logical, rational, and conservative people..
and they are absolutely terrified about the situation. This is why it’s so scary.

The situation is so dire, even George W. Bush’s Energy Adviser, Matthew Simmons,
has acknowledged “The situation is desperate.
This is the world’s biggest serious question.”
In an August 2003 interview, Mr. Simmons was asked…
if it was time for Peak Oil to become part of the public policy debate.
He responded:

“It is past time. As I have said, the experts and politicians have no Plan B to fall back on.
If energy peaks, particularly while 5 of the world’s 6.5 billion people have little or no use of modern energy,
it will be a tremendous jolt to our economic well-being and to our heath - greater than anyone could ever imagine.”

When asked if there is a solution, Simmons responded:

“I don’t think there is one. The solution is to pray. Under the best of circumstances,
if all prayers are answered, there will be no crisis for maybe two years. After that it’s a certainty.”

Simmons’ message has remained consistent. At a May 2004 conference on Peak Oil,
he predicted oil will be priced at $182 per barrel in the near future - over five times its current price.

To put Simmons’ predictions in perspective, consider the fact
Osama Bin Laden feels $200 is a “fair price” for a barrel of oil.

The phrase, “politics makes strange bed-fellows,” doesn’t quite do this one justice.

The likely effects of such radically high oil prices are hard to over-dramatize.
When controlled for inflation, oil prices have never exceeded the $80 per barrel mark,
which they broke during the 1979 oil crisis.

The result was a worldwide recession second only to the Great Depression in severity.

If $80 oil can slam the economy into a severe recession,
one can only imagine the damage $200+ oil is going to inflict.

Simmons isn’t the only reputable source sounding the alarm. 
According to Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham:

“America faces a major energy supply crisis over the next two decades.
The failure to meet this challenge will threaten our nation’s economic prosperity,
compromise our national security, and literally alter the way we lead our lives.”

The statements of Vice President Dick Cheney have been equally alarming. 
In late 1999, Cheney stated:

“By some estimates, there will be an average of two percent annual growth in global oil demand over the years ahead,
along with, conservatively, a three-percent natural decline in production from existing reserves.”

Cheney ended on a disturbing note,

“That means by 2010 we will need on the order of an additional 50 million barrels a day.”

This is equivalent to six times the amount of oil produced per day by Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading oil producer.

A report commissioned by Cheney and released in 2001 was no less rosy:

“The most significant difference between now and a decade ago..
is the extraordinarily rapid erosion of spare capacities at critical segments of energy chains.
Today, shortfalls appear to be endemic.
Among the most extraordinary of these losses of spare capacity is in the oil arena.” 

In May 2001, President George W. Bush himself stated,
“What people need to hear loud and clear is that we’re running out of energy in America.”

THE MAN PICKED by President George W Bush to head America’s Central Intelligence Agency is even more of an intelligence insider than has so far been revealed…

Although membership in a secret society would seem to  compromise a bit anyone being considered to lead an Agency which is itself a secret society, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Republican Porter J Goss of Sanibel Island Florida is a member of the secret society “Book & Snake” at Yale. 

President George W Bush’s nominee to head the nation’s flagship intelligence agency also appears to be visible in a photograph taken in 1963 in a Mexico City nightclub of members of  the CIA’s secret assassination squad known as “Operation Forty.”

The Mexico City nightclub photo reveals a mixed group of apparent Cuban exiles, Italian wise guys, and square-jawed military intelligence types. It was discovered among keepsakes kept in the safe of the widow of CIA pilot and drug smuggler Barry Seal (third from left). It appears on the cover of “Barry & ‘the boys:’ The CIA, the Mob & America’s Secret History” (MadCow Press, Eugene OR. 2001). 

Goss appears second on the left. He is seated between notorious CIA pilot and drug smuggler Barry Seal (third left) and the equally-notorious CIA assassin Felix Rodriguez (front left), a Cuban vice cop under the corrupt Mob-run Batista regime who later became an Iran Contra operative and a confidant of the first George Bush. 

The only one of the spook celebrants displaying any hint of tradecraft (seated on the other side of the table covering his face with his sport coat) is Frank Sturgis, most famous as one of the Watergate burglars. 

Beside him sits (front right) William Seymour, New Orleans representative of the Double-Chek Corporation, a CIA front used to recruit pilots (like Seal), and a man who many Kennedy assassination researchers believe impersonated Lee Harvey Oswald on several occasions when the lone nut gunman was out of the country and so unable to impersonate himself. 

As we saw it, the photo was in a yellowed frame, the kind used by nightclub photographers to create instant keepsakes. Seal’s widow Debbie Seal kept it in her safe, where it was overlooked by a 7-man team from the State Department which arrived at her house in 1995 to comb through her records. 

It bears the name of a nightclub in Mexico City, and is stamped January 22, 1963, which, if you’re counting,  was exactly ten months to the day before the Kennedy assassination. 

Barry Seal was then a young-looking 24-year old. Porter Goss was the same age.
