judicial problems

methinks..the courts are going to have alot on their hands in the coming weeks..
LAWSUITS FOR FALSE ARREST AND POLICE ABUSE..citizen x witnessed
mass arrests at various locations around manhattan..both in and around protests
AND ALSO in parts of town where nothing at all seeemed to be happening..
..besides the abuses..
one of the problems is that the entrapment routines mostly snag bystanders
who are forced into a “target group” through the use of barricades..
once trapped it is useless to claim that “I AM NOT A PROTESTER”
(it simply means no one will lend you a quarter in jail)
about 300-400 people got taken in today that citizen x saw first hand
the prevailing wisdom seems to be “ARREST EM ALL…”
“LET THE JUDGE SORT EM OUT”
im sure this will break in the corporate media tonight
it was too overt and random to be ignored..bystanders often advocated
LOUDLY for the release of those detained..sitting and refusing to move.
NEW YORK BRINGS OUT THE BEST and the worst..
a mass jail solidarity vigil is planned for sept 2nd at pier 57
where conditions.. NLG representatives say..are inhumane.
this reminds me of a little anecdote i heard from a cabbie in Contantinople..
“if the jails in Turkey were as nice as those in NYC..”
“WE WOULD ALL CHECK IN FOR THE WINTER!”

bus riders against bush

in midday A31..activists at Port Authority terminal..
dropped a banner(with suspiciously familiar design;))
reading FOUR MORE MONTHS..cute huh?
from the rooftop and disappeared..
considering the police preparations
the security seemed lax
and the banner hung fully visible
for almost 15 minutes..

think about it………

8.30.2004

it has begun

fully geared riot police surrounded the poor peoples rally
at the united natons EVEN BEFORE IT REALLY BEGAN..
the intention to march was well known BUT not permitted..
the police ALMOST suppressed the rally in Dag Hammerskold Plaza
IN FRONT OF THE UNITED NATIONS..only a blitz negotiation..
mediated by NLG observers.. forerstalled the inevitable..
the group marched down 2nd avenue to 23rd street..
where they turned west and headed towards 8th avenue..
(the only “incident” being an undercover policeman
being ejected from the ranks of marchers)
all along twenty third street people draped bed sheets..
clothing…anything they could wave..out their windows..
to show unity with the poor and unemployed..the marchers ROARED back
seeming to be charged by the display..
after making it to 29th street and 8th ave..IT BEGAN
the police WITH NO WARNING invaded the crowd swinging billy clubs..
and riot batons and deploying interlocking metal barriers to “split the march”

THIS IS A TACTIC..citizen x has seen it used before..
it is unbeleivable in its BLATANT inflammatory nature..
IT MUST BE SEEN FIRST HAND TO BE UNDERSTOOD..
there was NO announcement..
i asked every senior official on the scene..
what the meaning of the police behavior was..
I WAS THREATENED WITH ARREST AND VIOLENCE..
there were NO corporate media present on the scene..
the early reports were conducted from 25th street and 8th ave.
well out of sight of the now isolated marchers..
all but the indymedia were either elsewhere or..
ALLOWED THEMSELVES TO BE kept..
at an extreme distance from “the action”..
citizen x followed phalanxes of riot police..
who themselves were following young students..
as they attempted to EXIT THE AREA..when it seemed..
that the youth were safely away..OUT OF DANGER of being beaten..
in the abandoned side street..i returned to 29th and 8th..
at this point i loudly demanded an explanation as to why?
the poor people were being treated..
IN SO DIFFERENT A WAY than other protesters PERMITTED OR NOT..
i declared that the police were employing unconstitutional mechanisms..
to deny citizens THEIR RIGHT to free speech and assembly..
IN DIRECT CONTEMPT of a New York State court order..
regarding the use of PENNING TACTICS..again i was THREATENED..
without compunction without any sense of ethic or professionalism..
THESE WERE THUGS IN UNIFORMS.
citizen x has praised the NYPD for their conduct in earlier protests..
now I CONDEMN THEM.
TOMORROW IS A31..
A DAY OF DIRECT ACTION
AGAINST DELEGATES AND THEIR EVENTS
ladies and gentlemen
its ON.

“they’re heeeere”

things have changed SIGNIFICANTLY in NYC today..the reason?
yup..the RNC convention has begun..street closures are happening
for what (to the casual observer) seem like arbitrary reasons..
a block is closed for two hours..NOTHING happens..then it reopens
random violations of civil liberties are happening EVERYWHERE.
bicycles are essentially VERBOTEN..cyclists are stopped.. harrassed
and arrested WITHOUT CAUSE..or under the spurious claim that..
“they were seen in the critical mass ride”..police are disorganized now
and OBVIOUSLY under pressure from senior officials to do “questionable”
things..citizenx has been detained three separate times now and each time
has avoided arrest..mostly due to attentive and concerned fellow citizens..
who surround and question the police..THIS IS NOT AT PROTESTS..
this is at the pizza place on ninth ave..photographers are also being targeted
a fully credentialed NEWSDAY reporter was VIOLENTLY arrested.
THIS IS NOW AN UGLY SITUATION..THIS IS FALLUJAH USA.
the residents are the enemy..the occupiers are struggling for control.

the BIG day

well..well..NY said NO to george w. bush
and the entire neocon agenda today..
in a BIG way
i talked to people ALL over town and to be accurate..
EVERYONE used astronomical terms to describe the massed crowd..
there simply were..ARE.. millions..
MILLIONS!..

this is not a joke.
it was like this..
(forgive me if you are unfamiliar with the topography of manhattan)
CNN is reporting “thousands”
the NEW YORK TIMES is reporting “hundreds of thousands”
FUCK THEM..
flatly put those organizations have vested interests..
in claims made and confirmed…as do the organizers..
among them not seeming “ridiculous”
in claims made about attendees to THEIR events..
citizenx has no such concerns
i KNOW manhattan.
LETS DO THE MATH..
imagine if you will.. and really… TRY
the march commenced at noon..
14th street and seventh avenue
was the southern extremity of SOLID humanity..
building to building avenue wide HUMANITY
is swelled up seventh…past MadisonSquareGarden
turned right at 34th street and continued to fifth avenue
where it swung south again headed for Union Square..
now before the people at fourteenth and 7th had even MOVED yet
the head of the march began POURING into Union Square..
FORTY FIVE SOLID BLOCKS..
and theres more..

this entire situation was entirely too bovine for me
SO..
i biked around and around..
around the march itself
and around the surrounding closed streets and avenues..
like a pedal powered electron macroscope
i attempted to capture (in the quantum sense)
a SENSE of what was occuring…in this place..at a given time..
at 2;00pm the marchers at sixteenth street were shuffling forward
the march had by then been emptying into Union Square for half an hour!
NOW..at this point it must be added..
that the people finishing the march exited the area QUICKLY and..
WITHOUT INCIDENT..
i circled the area a dozen times..
and when i say circled i mean 8th street..
from 2nd avenue to 10th ave.
up to 38th street (four blocks BEHIND the POLICE WALL)
the numbers were STAGGERING..
at four o’clock the tail end of the now thinning march crossed the original start
at 22nd and seventh..
UNFORTUNATELY..a giant papier mache fire breathing dragon malfunctioned
in front of mcdonalds..
burning the contraption to cinders.. but luckily injuring NO ONE..
NYPD and firefighters made quick work of the wreckage..
and the delay was minimal..
THE FACT REMAINS.
45 SOLID blocks of people for four hours STRAIGHT..
new moving people…continuing to fill THAT amount of space
relentlessly for FOUR HOURS..

details follow..
for now
from the largest demonstration of single minded WILL..
IN..
THE HISTORY..
OF NEW YORK CITY..
this is citizenx
out.

CRITICAL MASS A27

HISTORY was made last night as nearly ten thousand bicyclists
all took to the streets to protest…well…everything really…
take your pick..environmental devastation..corporatocracy..
im sure evey single person had their own reason to ride.
citizen x rode because:

A. BICYCLES ARE FUN..and it is a self sufficient form
of transportation.
B. CYCLING IS AUTONOMY..you go as fast AS YOU CAN
generally speaking..no hassles with waiting or parking.
C. PROTEST IS NOT “PERMITTED”..a parade is NOT a
protest..living a sustainable lifestyle IS.

the ride began in Union Square park at about 7:00pm
flyers WERE distributed to the people assembled..
instructions from the NYPD making it clear (at least to me)
that THEY considered the forthcoming ride ILLEGAL.
and that participants once engaged were subject to arrest.
HOWEVER..things went brilliantly UNTIL..
about a hour and half into the ride..which blocked entire
avenues for ten and twelve blocks at times..the police
began to apprehend and arrest cyclists..despite overwhelming
public support (cheering crowds throughout manhattan)
and chants of “LET THEM GO” by onlookers..NYPD
literally NETTED over 350 people over the course of the night
some in Times Square..some near Madison Square Garden..
a few at 22nd and second ave. and the majority at St Marks Church
(so much for sanctuary Esmerelda)

on the corner of 10th street and second ave.
EXTREME FORCE WAS USED AGAINST PEACEFUL CITIZENS
as usual..tit for tat..
police officer clubs unarmed cyclist
crowd demolishes a dozen police scooters
unchecked escalation resulted in nearly five hundred riot police
surrounding the churchyard for hours after the ride had ended.
ONE GOOD SAMARITAN..Kristian of Brooklyn submitted to arrest

while trying to intervene on the behalf of a young man being..
mercilessly truncheoned by officers..he is currently still in custody
without charge and suffers neurological damage to his hands from
mis-applied “zipcuffs” which cut off his circulation for hours..
after it was recognized by officers that the device was improperly
twisted and was too tight.

at the time of this posting NYPD are deployed at the TIMES UP!
convergence space..with “a list of names” of people to be taken into custody.?

ALSO JUST IN.. bicycle activist Joshua Kinberg was arrested..not for riding or graffiti
but after giving an interview to MSNBC in which he said he built the bike.

THE BOTTOM LINE..the delegates are NOW in town..NO MORE FUCKING AROUND.

the bottomER line…WHEN PEOPLE JOIN TOGETHER PEACEFULLY TO ASSERT
THEMSELVES THEY CANNOT BE SILENCED.

out of towners

as the weekend ratchets up..it seems SOME conservative attendees
are taking to the streets themselves…
and apparently think that NYC is their personal frat party.
OBVIOUSLY intoxicated..and belligerent..
(whether substance or ideology is the catalyst..is anyones guess)
these folks are straying WAY out of what could be considered
“safe zones”.. i.e. their hotels.. into “colorful” neighborhoods
confronting random residents and generally making a nuisance
of themselves..

CITIZEN X REMINDER:

SPITTING AND USE OF PERSONAL DEFENSE ITEMS
(such as Mace and pepper spray) ARE CONSIDERED ASSAULT
UNDER NEW YORK STATE LAW..

that said
EXPRESS YOURSELF (and keep it to the darker side streets)

United for Peace and Justice announced today
that the planned A29 march from 23rd street will
commence as planned past Madison Square Garden
turn east on 34th street and then again down
fifth ave and finally Broadway ending at Union Square park
AT WHICH POINT..the massed crowd is to disperse…
breakaway marches are discouraged…BUT..BIG BUT..
people are free to INDIVIDUALLY make their way to..
you guessed it..Central Park..

NO SIGNS OR BANNERS PLEASE
just a simple QUIET and repectful day in the park

with a quarter million of your friends and neighbors
PLEASE KEEP OFF THE GRASS ;)

DNC2RNC arrive in NYC

CONGRATULATIONS to the marchers who arrived today from boston
where they departed after the DNC..slowly making their way through the east
spreading the word of WARNING about corporate dominated politics..

from the Bronx the weary but celebratory trekkers made their way to
and assembled spontaneously in Columbus Circle..
where an ad hoc negotiation was held with the NYPD..
in no time an escort was arranged and the group..now swelling into the hundreds
with bike bloc and other contingents in solidarity..marched down broadway

during the height of rush hour closing streets all the way to Union Square park
MUCH RESPECT TO THE NYPD..who by and large were also in solidarity
not having resolved their contract disputes with Bloombergs office..

BIG RUCKUS

A group of activists calling themselves “Operation Sibyl,” describing themselves as a concerned group of students and professionals, dropped a banner off of the Plaza Hotel on 58th St. and 5th Ave the morning of August 26. The banner read “Bush” with an arrow pointing one way, and “Truth,” with an arrow pointing in the other direction. Police were slow to respond, and by the time they arrived on the scene the banner was ready to be unfurled. Police attempted to rush up with a team of specialists with climbing gear and stop the banner from being dropped, but arrived too late. A large crowd gathered and media from around the world eventually arrived on the scene.

paul reveres ride

“One if by chartered jet, two if by S.U.V.”

Greene Dragon and TIME’S UP! held their historic ride on “horse-cycles” down Lexington Avenue, alerting New Yorkers “The Republicans are coming!”  The ride stopped for a call to “Liberty” at Madison Square Garden and then continued to the Counter-RNC Kickoff Party at Webster Hall.
hundreds of red white and blue clad cyclists participated
and although the ride was unpermitted the NYPD
did not interfere.. in fact..they provided an escort.
A GOOD START to what promises to be an historical week
in the Big Apple.

denial of service INTERNET attacks

reposting from Indymedia NYC website:

Recently, you may have noticed that Indymedia sites in New York City and elsewhere have been slower than usual, and even impossible to reach at times. While some of the slowdown is due to generally higher numbers of visitors as the Republican National Convention approaches, nyc.indymedia.org has also been the target of “denial of service” (DoS)attacks wherein an individual or group of people intentionally attempts to disable a target website. NYC Indymedia also wishes to disclaim any affiliation with DoS attacks currently underway against certain right-wing websites.

These DoS attacks and counter-attacks have the feel not of enlightened political discourse, or even of civil protest, but rather of the futile and circular arms races taking place all too often in our world. Neither side seeks to create, only to destroy the other.

We’d like to reiterate that NYC Indymedia has not been associated with any of the DoS or other attacks on right-wing websites. Due to our philosophy of open publishing, anyone can post to our website. Even in the case of content so objectionable (for example, calls to blatantly illegal action) that our editorial collective decides to hide or remove the posting, there can be a delay while the hiding or removal takes place, a delay that is of course all the longer if our website is not working.

We encourage all those interested in the upcoming RNC to turn to NYC IMC and the whole Indymedia network for news and information. And we especially encourage everyone to follow the Indymedia philosophy and become the media.

Martha Stewart Judge Denies ANSWER Protest Permit
Amusingly… the very first people to break
this story was Bloomberg’s own media company,
but it lists the judge.

A coincidence? It’s the same judge sending
Martha Stewart (a Democrat) to prison for a
$40,000 stock trade… while exempting Enron
